Fascinating aromas of iron, blood, and dark berries. Some flowers. Full-bodied yet fresh and intense with tar and pumice and plenty of red fruits. Chewy yet polished tannins buttress the wine nicely. Better in a couple of years. Try after 2025.

Every time I taste Idda rosso, my heart melts – there's something about this south-slope Nerello Mascalese (with a dash of Nerello Cappuccio) which evokes all the romance of not just Etna and it's smoking peaks, but also the autumnal mists of the Langhe (that'll be the Gaja connection) and even the venerable crus of the Côte d’Or. This 2021 is tightly knit and sapid, with a purity of fragrant cherry and wild strawberry, and an undercurrent of earth, iron and spices. It reveals flashes of herbs and spice around the edges and it remains beautifully fresh throughout. The fine tannins are chalky and grippy and need another year or two to relax, but all the volcano's energy is evident in this poised, balletic red. (JB)

The 2021 Etna Rosso is spicy with a burst of savory herbs and flowery underbrush, complicating a core of dried black cherries. It flows across the palate like pure silk, polished and refined with mounting saline mineral tones contrasting its ripe wild berry fruits. The 2021 takes on a juicy quality through the finale, leaving gently grippy tannins to mingle with lavender and inner rose. This remarkably pretty Etan Rosso should drink beautifully with only minimal cellaring. (EG)

An enticing, graceful red, with a perfumed nose of dried rose petal, grilled rosemary and a touch of incense spices. This is plush and supple on the palate, offering a lovely range of dried raspberry and plum skin, plus a subtle underpinning of tar-tinged smoke notes. Hints of orange peel and red licorice linger on the persistent finish. Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Drink now through 2034. (AN)

Notes

Idda Etna Rosso is a refined and expressive red wine produced on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, a collaboration between the renowned Gaja family and local winemaker Alberto Graci. "Idda," meaning "she" in Sicilian, is a tribute to the majestic presence of Mount Etna, reflecting the reverence for the region’s unique terroir. Crafted primarily from Nerello Mascalese, with a small amount of Nerello Cappuccio, this wine embodies the elegance, structure, and minerality that characterize the best wines from Etna. On the nose, Idda Etna Rosso reveals enticing aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and dark plums, interwoven with notes of dried herbs, rose petals, and a subtle smokiness. Earthy undertones and hints of spice add depth to the aromatic profile. The palate is medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannins and bright, balanced acidity that carry flavors of ripe red fruit, savory herbs, and a touch of minerality. The finish is long, smooth, and polished, with a delicate, mineral-driven edge that speaks to the volcanic soils of Etna.
