Reviewed July 2022Glossed to a high sheen, the 2018 Bartolo Mascarello is the epitome of elegance. Capturing the enticing fragrance and silky tannins that the vintage is known for, it opens with heady aromas of violet, rose petal, blood orange and baking spice while the delicious palate openly reveals juicy red cherry, star anise, cinnamon and eucalyptus notes alongside smooth tannins. A saline mineral note lingers on the close. It has a weightless finesse and great balance and despite being full-bodied, it dances on the palate.

This is a superbly delicate and carefully finessed wine that interprets the growing season with its alternating cold and hot intervals in an impeccable manner. The Bartolo Mascarello 2018 Barolo puts Nebbiolo and the vintage seamlessly together like lock and key. It opens to a beautiful drinking experience. The bouquet shows detail and finely tuned aromas of redcurrant, violet, rusty nail and blood orange. On the palate, this Barolo is so shiny and polished that it feels like silk. Without a doubt, this is one of the top wines of 2018. (ML) 97+

The Wine Independent
Maria Teresa Mascarello believes in the Barolo Classico - a blend of grapes from different vineyards - telling me she "likes balance from the different vineyards even more so in these conditions of climate change." The 2018 Bartolo Mascarello Barolo takes a while to really open and reveal itself but when it does it has a beautiful array of wildflower aromas with red cherry, violet, iris, and rose notes. It is delicate, yet richly perfumed and fragrant, like a garden of flowers after the rain. On the palate it is super-silky with a lace-like covering of flavors which are fragile but persistent. There is a light grip to the elegant, upright tannins followed by mouth-watering acidity, giving a lively, vivid finish. It is a transparent, vibrant, and beautiful wine. (SH)

Lush and pure, the 2018 Barolo is a medium and transparent ruby hue, with aromas of fresh roses, wet stone, and ripe raspberry. This medium-bodied red is luxurious. with a silky and viscous texture and generous notes of ripe red cherry, warming cardamom spice, and soft earth. Elegant and long through the palate, with no harshness, it is drinking beautifully now or will continue to drink well over the next 15 years. Fermentation saw 45 days on the skins with a submerged cap. (AF)
Notes
Praise from Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "Maria Teresa Mascarello turned out a very beautiful 2018 Barolo. Mascarello gave her 2018 about 30 days on the skins, which is a bit shorter than normal, but still opted for submerged cap maceration. Because of the lighter structure of the year, Mascarello did not rack the Barolo at all during the second year of aging. Readers will find a very beautiful and classy Barolo that embodies so much of what makes these wines so alluring." (02/2022)
