Extremely perfumed with flowers, cherries, dark earth and bark. Some black truffle. Medium body. Fine tannins that are polished, yet firm. Slightly chewy at the end. A refined yet structured young Brunello. Special selection from here. Needs four or five years to come around. Try after 2027.

The second vintage of this bottling, Magistra is a selection made in the vineyard in collaboration with the estate’s long-time oenologist Lorenzo Scotto. Matured in smaller casks than the classic Brunello, it is still in the throes of its wood-driven youth. Aromas of cedar and vanilla join rich, luscious plum on the palate. Densely concentrated with a grainy texture, this is shored up by substantial, sturdy tannins. There is a lot here, including heady alcohol. Ultimately weighs a bit heavy. (MM)

Notes

97 points, Ian d'Agata's Terroir Sense. Launched for the first time last year in what was a slightly curious choice given the sub-par year, the 2019 Magistra showcases everything you’d expect and more from a top-flight, high-end Brunello. Good full red-ruby. Complex, multilayered aromas and flavours of red cherry and truffle are complicated by strong, sexy notes of cinnamon and sweet spices. Then also rich and layered in the mouth, with harmonious acidity and smooth if youthful tannins nicely framing the sultry red fruit nuances on the long rising finish. This superb Brunello is made with grapes picked in Sesta di Sopra winery’s oldest vineyard (forty years old+); it is located in one of the two best areas of the whole Montalcino denomination (together with Montosoli, there is no better piece of land in all of Montalcino in which to grow Sangiovese than Sesta) and so no surprise that in a great vintage the wine really shines.
