Part of a brilliant current range of red wines from Rodrigo Romero and Maquis, Lien is a very good value assemblage of Cabernet Franc with 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Carmenère. Graphite, bay leaf and green salad aromas segue into a palate of sweet spices, filigree tannins, blueberry, cassis and black cherry fruit and a bright, balanced finish

A nice touch of reductive character. Cocoa powder savoriness to the black cherries, dried herbs and tobacco leaf. A twist of cigar box. Very polished on the palate with natural, fresh acidity and a supple mouthfeel. Refined, silky and long. Nothing showy and super drinkable. 46% cabernet franc, 36% cabernet sauvignon and 18% carmenere. Drink or hold.

This year, Lien is 46% cabernet franc, 36% cabernet sauvignon, and 18% carmenere, a selection from Maquis' own vineyards in Colchagua. After two years in barrels, this continues to maintain a very fruity character, the sensation of tart black fruits passing through the palate with liveliness, making your mouth water. This, like all the house reds, needs time in the bottle.

The 2019 Lien, their first wine produced since 2003, was produced with a blend of 46% Cabernet Franc, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon and 18% Carménère fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel, and after malolactic, it was transferred to barrel, where it matured for 18 months. It was bottled with 14.5% alcohol, a little riper than the 2018 that I tasted next to it but still with an elegant profile and very fine tannins, balanced, fresh and young, with the ingredients to evolve nicely in bottle. 13,500 bottles were filled in July 2021. Notes

The Viña Maquis vineyard has owned by Hurtado family for over a century, but it wasn’t until about 20 years ago that they began producing their own wines. Situated in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, the winery specializes in unique, single-vineyard estate wines, with a commitment to creating balanced wines—avoiding both over-ripeness and the “green” flavors that can result from under-ripe grapes. The main Maquis vineyard is almost like an island, bordered by the Tinguiririca River on one side and the Chimbarongo Creek on the other. These waterways, which once carried alluvial sediments from the Andes, now serve as natural channels for cool coastal breezes, helping to temper the region’s warm climate. Maquis Lien is crafted from a blend of Carmenere and other Bordeaux varieties. To achieve a concentrated and fruit-forward style, the vines are pruned to yield no more than 12 grape clusters per plant. Only the ripest grapes are hand-harvested and sorted at the winery. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
