This stuff is so overtly awesome it's hard not recommend it even to people who adamantly hate peat smoke. Something about putting that sweet syrupy sherry note on top of Lagavulin's oily robust spirit is so satisfying. I see why every other distiller in the world is trying to emulate it. Of course, nothing is like Lagavulin so where others fail miserably, the Lagavulin Distillers Edition is a triumph. Massive, rich, all encompassing, yet balanced - this is whisky you'll need to savor slowly. The sweet nutty aromas of the sherry make it seem almost dessert like on the nose, but all that oil and smoke keeps it in range. As always, there is a limited supply of this whisky and once it's gone we'll have to wait for the new release. Now with new rolled back pricing, we're selling it for the same price as releases from 10+ years ago. Totally worth every dollar still.

Notes

Distilling at Lagavulin on Islay’s southern coast dates back to at least 1742, when illicit whisky was made in the area. John Johnston officially founded the distillery in 1816, near the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle on Lagavulin Bay. Local peat, Atlantic air and notably slow distillation help shape its deeply smoky, maritime single malt. The Distillers Edition is double-matured in ex-bodega Pedro Ximénez cask wood, adding intense raisiny sweetness to Lagavulin’s powerful smoke. Bottled at 43% ABV, it layers peat, vanilla, roasted malt, dried fruit, coffee and a salty tang, with an exceptionally long finish of fruit, peat and oak. A multi-year award winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the International Wine and Spirit Competition, the International Spirit Competition and the Scotch Whisky Masters, it has also earned Best Islay honors at the World Whiskies Awards.
