Reviewed February 2023Miguel Merino buys the grapes from this 1.2-hectare parcel of Mazuelo in Briones, but farms them as if they were his own. Savoury, bright, layered and wonderfully complex, this is engagingly scented and ethereal, somewhere between a top red Burgundy and a Ribeira Sacra in style, with graceful tannins, pomegranate and pink grapefruit flavours and a core of succulent sweetness.

Decanter
Miguel Merino Jr loves finesse so there is no trace of rusticity in this single-vineyard Mazuelo coming from a plot grown on poor alluvial soils on Monte Calvario in Briones. A subtle, nicely textured red with well-integrated acidity and lively red fruit over a herbal background. Aged in 500-litre seasoned French oak barrels and concrete tanks. (AC)
Notes
The Miguel Merino Gran Reserva is sourced from some of their very best sites. Old vineyards that were planted in the 1950s and 1960s. And importantly planted in some of the highest hills surrounding the village of Briones with steeper slopes with limestone rich clay soils. Quinta Cruz in a single vineyard that was planted on a steep slope in 1986. Close to the Ebro River the soils are poor and pebbly. It was fermentedin stainless steel then aged in 500L French oak and Concrete. This is a singlur expression of Manzuelo (Carignan) in the region.
