Reviewed March 2022
This is a new wine for this estate, to celebrate the long-term relationship between Napa Valley’s Carlo Mondavi and Lange’s Giovanna Bagnasco (Brandini, as well as this property). It’s a delicious blend of dolcetto and nebbiolo that’s fruity and generous with a citrusy undertone to the purple fruit, finishing with cinnamon and other spices. Drink now.

Beautifully bright and brilliant with effusive aromatics of strawberry and dusty red cherries, notes of anise and candied cherry. This blend of Dolcetto and Nebbiolo from the permaculture-farmed vineyards high in the Langhe is a study in pure fruit character. Flavours of blue and black berry fruits are accented by rustic and savoury wild thyme. The palate is fresh with ample structure, and dusty tannins deliver a protracted, red fruit finish. (CP)

The 2020 Langhe Rosso Solo Per Amore is another serious wine from Sorì della Sorba, despite its rather silly name. A blend of 60% Dolcetto and 40% Nebbiolo, the Rosso conveys depth, intensity and notable personality. Sumptuous dark red fruit, licorice, pomegranate, red flowers and orange peel fill out the layers. There's terrific depth and just the right amount of grip in the tannins to wrap it all together. Here, too, the 80% stems are not especially perceptible. (AG)

Notes

Carlo Mondavi and Giovanna Bagnasco began their Sorì della Sorba project in 2019, working a south-facing amphitheater of vines in Diano d’Alba. Oak woods surround the site, and the limestone soils include clay, sand and stone. The vineyard lies just outside the Barolo DOCG boundary. Solo per Amore means “for the love of it,” and the 2020 combines 60% Dolcetto with 40% Nebbiolo, both grown at the estate. Mondavi and Bagnasco began converting the vineyards to organic farming when they took over, with permaculture guiding their approach to the surrounding land.
