Reviewed November 2022Whole berry/bunch open fermentation for 3 weeks; matured for 10 months in French oak. The Willowlake vineyard is one of the first to venture to the Upper Yarra. Balance is the key word for this beautiful pinot, the red cherry/berry fragrance is mirrored by the palate, where delicate but clear savoury notes of spice are woven through the red fruit palate and aftertaste.

Medium-deep red-purple colour; intense and bright spice aromas, nutty/smoky barrel and foresty fruit aromas combine to give a complex and savoury bouquet, the same flavours on palate where it's full and rich, generous and sustained, the flavours extending long through the aftertaste. Aromas of red cherries, rosemary stem, rose and fresh mint. Medium-bodied with fine, fruit-soaked tannins. Succulent and vibrant on the palate with very good brightness and energy. Fresh and pretty. A lovely pinot. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Local Vineyard Series Willowlake Vineyard Pinot Noir is detailed and silky, like its Chardonnay sibling. Layers of bright cherry fruit, summer strawberries and spice in the mouth overlap with mineral acidity and very fine, pumice stone tannins. It's like the texture of musks sticks, even. This is a lovely wine, and with subtle power and drive, too.
