Reviewed February 2013 Lovely aromas of bright fruit and flowers with just a hint of chocolate. Full body, with super silky tannins and an ultra-refined palate. Elegant and sexy. Best ever from here.

Juicy and engaging, offering dark plum, raspberry coulis and sweet tobacco notes at the core, studded with wood spice and licorice snap accents. Features ample toast on the finish, with good drive for balance. (JM)

The 2010 Balestard la Tonnelle has turned out quite well in 2010, with its ripeness never straying over the line into sur maturité. The bouquet offers up a sappy blend of black cherries, chocolate, smoke, soil tones and toasty new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and modern in style, but nicely balanced, with good mid-palate depth, firm tannins, well-integrated acids and quite good length and grip on the finish. Of the more modern-styled wines in St. Émilion, Balestard la Tonnelle is one of the most impressive in this vintage.

Opaque ruby-purple. Initially reduced nose opens with air to reveal ripe plum, cedar, underbrush and balsamic vinegar notes. Deep, dense and chewy, with rich, ripe flavors of black fruits and cocoa. Finishes with burly tannins, very good length and a trace of heat. This impressive wine will need time. (ID)

A dry start point with light herbs and a dash of orange peel. Fleshes out quickly with bigger dark red fruits and finishes on the bright side. Lovely.
