James Suckling

Reviewed August 2023
An ample and succulent muscat that easily has enough lively acidity to carry this slightly off-dry style. Lots of summer flowers and a touch of sushi ginger on the juicy, medium-bodied palate. Good length and very clean. From organically grown grapes.

Harvested on the limestone of the Eichberg Grand Cru, the 2020 Muscat was declassified because the varietal intensity of Muscat usually masks the terroir. Orange blossom and elderflower vie for intensity on the nose, accompanied by bright lemon. The palate is rich with tropical fruit, peach and mango, edged with lemon. It carries its 8g/L of residual sweetness very lightly. (Off-dry) (AK)

Notes

Domaine Baur produces wine from 12 hectares (30 acres) of vines of which 3 hectares are in the Grand Cru Eichberg and Pfersigberg. The terroir is composed mainly of clay, old limestone, and marl, giving the wines of Domain Baur a rich creaminess and depth of flavor, as well as an interesting complexity in both aromas and flavors. The Eichberg Grand Cru faces southeast and benefits from the warm & dry microclimate generated by its location at the base of the Vosges Mountains. The soils are mainly limestone conglomerates and marls with lots of broken sandstone mixed with clay and sand and small stones. Only Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewurztraminer are permitted in this Grand Cru.
