Reviewed July 2019Lastly, the 2017 L'Amourette, which is mostly Mourvèdre, offers a medium to full-bodied, rounded, yet elegant style that carries complex notes of black raspberries, spiced meat, pepper, and earthy aromas and flavors. It’s ripe, complex, balanced, and already hard to resist.

This red shows a very attractive, linear bead of fine tannins, running through the center palate. Medium body. Attractive berry and chocolate character. Lively finish.

I'm a sucker for Mourvedre. It's one of my favorite grape varieties but its hard to find a good one and even harder to find one at a budget oriented price. Now that we bring in Thunevin-Calvet, we have access to all their terrific cuvees but my favorite standout is l'Amourette... because it's Mourvedre! And what a sensation! Blueberry, incense, exotic flowers and spices, what more could you ask for? It's like walking through a Moroccan spice market all wound into a glass. One of my favorite expression of Mourvedre is Bandol and this just about nails it for texture, and profile. And, it's 1/3 the price of any other comparable wine from that region! When you try it, you'll understand why I was so eager to bring these wines in. One of our great new partnerships from last year, is sure to become one of our longest running relationships.

The Roussillon region extends its tapestry of vines from southern France to Catalonia and its climate is influenced by both the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, embodying a range of wines and styles that have inspired iconoclasts and garagistes to the region. This fertile synergy has generated some of the more memorable, more bang for your Euro wines on earth, such as this lushly aromatic, velvety red from Thunevin-Calvet. Dominated by enticing, deeply-hued Mourvedre with a fandango of Grenache, delivering blackberry, dark plum, chocolate, floral and wild mint notes, with smooth, supple tannins. Pair this wonderful value with a rich ragout or grilled sausages.
Notes
It is fitting that the winemaking duo behind Thunevin-Calvet launched their project from a garage in an alley in the small village of Maury, considering that one of the owners is Jean-Luc Thunevin of Château Valandraud, the original garagiste winemaker of St-Émilion. Thunevin and partner Jean-Roger Calvet combined forces in 2001 and have slowly expanded this project from those humble beginnings to its now 65-hectare estate. L'Amourette is mostly Mourvèdre with some Grenache.
