Reviewed July 2015Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 Shiraz Covenant offers an intense, crème de cassis, baked blueberries and black forest cake nose enhanced by tar and chargrill and black loam nuances. This big, full-bodied wine is densely packed and structured like a brick house with firm and chewy tannins, good acid freshness and a long, earthy finish. It needs time. (LPB) 93+

Earthy, ripe, dark fruit aromas are the first impression on the bouquet. Medium-bodied palate, with almost dried-fruit flavours although the feel is quite fresh and bright. The finish is a little warm and edgy but that will resolve no doubt. There's plenty of character here, but it needs time to integrate and settle into its skin.

(30% new French oak): Inky purple. Deeply pitched cassis, blueberry, licorice and vanilla scents are enlivened by a spicy nuance and a bright jolt of smoky minerals. Lush and open-knit, offering sappy, vivacious black and blue fruit flavors. Floral pastille and spicecake flavors stain the palate, picking up candied violet and cola notes on the back half. The vanilla and mineral notes comes back strong on a youthfully tannic, strikingly persistent finish. (JR)

Not for the faint of heart. Dense and intense, with chewy tannins and plenty of Earl Grey tea notes to complement the wild blackberry core. The tannins become chewy on the finish but don't get in the way of the wine's focus. Drink now through 2030. (MW)
