Ritterguts is a brewery known for doing one thing really, really well: gose. And if Freigeist is known for doing one thing well, it's taking old German beer styles and looking at them from a fresh perspective. Needless to say, when we found out these two had teamed up for a collaboration beer, we were excited. Their upcoming release, Urgose 1375, does not disappoint. To create it, the two brewers got together on the 500th anniversary of the 1516 introduction of Reinheitsgebot, the famous German brewing purity law, to brew a historical gose recipe. The recipe is (of course) a gose, brewed with cinnamon and inoculated with native yeast during a stint in a coolship. Additionally, yeast captured from 1940s gose bottles from the original Ritterguts brewery was pitched into the beer before the beer for fermentation. Finally, the beer was transferred to old wooden barrels and aged for two years.
