A stunning bottling from the Franscioni family, this shows exotic cinnamon, crystallized black-cherry juice, fresh black raspberry and graphite on the extremely elegant, soft and inviting nose. There's a tension between ripe black raspberry and everything else on the palate, from fennel and black pepper to black slate minerality. It's a seamless wine. (MK)

Brilliant ruby. Energetic scents of spice-accented strawberry, cherry cola and Asian spices, plus a hint of potpourri. Spicy and focused on the palate, offering appealingly sweet red berry and floral pastille flavors that fan out slowly on the back half. The floral and spice notes echo emphatically on an impressively long, silky finish that features harmonious tannins and building sweetness. (JR)

Gary commented that after Rosella's, the Sierra Mar vineyard is the most difficult blend to agree on. The 2014 Pinot Noir Sierra Mar shows the more savory, spice-driven style of all of these 2014s and has lots of red fruits, currants and underbrush to go with a medium-bodied, elegant and nicely balanced style on the palate. Despite its charming profile, it has solid depth and I suspect it will evolve nicely through 2024. (JD)

Firmly fruity, offering direct flavors of plum and black cherry that glide to the finish, where the tannins take on a tealike texture and aroma. Drink now through 2020. (JL)

Notes

From the winery: "Grapes for our 2014 Sierra Mar Vineyard Pinot Noir were harvested September 3-30th at 25.9-27.3 brix. The juice spent an average of 27 days on the skins before being pressed to French oak barrels for 11 months aging. The wine was racked once, and bottled unfiltered and unfined in August 2015."
