Reviewed December 2005Trying to upgrade their estate wines, Spottswoode has decided to produce a second wine called Lyndenhurst from young Cabernet Sauvignon vines. This is a very attractive alternative to the more expensive flagship wine. The 2002 has creamy richness, round, elegant dark berry flavors, spicy oak, and is ideal for drinking over the next 7-10 years. (RP)
Notes
Spottswoode farms its historic St. Helena estate on deep, gravelly alluvial soils along the western bench of Napa Valley, with Lyndenhurst drawn from younger vines and select vineyard partners that mirror the property’s farming standards. The estate has long championed organic viticulture and careful parcel delineation, emphasizing balance and site clarity across its Cabernet Sauvignon programs. The 2002 Lyndenhurst reflects this vineyard-driven philosophy and restrained élevage, centering the wine on benchland terroir and the disciplined stewardship that defines Spottswoode.
