A small step back from the insanely good 2011 (don’t miss a chance to try this), the 2013 Terrasses du Larzac Hissez O is still gorgeous, yet is closed and backwards at the moment and needs to be forgotten for a year or two. Offering a touch of damp earth and underbrush in its core of ripe plums, currants and assorted dark fruits, it’s medium-bodied, supple, polished and has fine tannin. It should keep nicely through 2025. The blend is 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 5% Cinsault, from higher elevation sites, that spent 22 months in three-year-old demi-muids. I found all three of these 2013s from Domaine de la Reserve d’O to show the fresher, more austere nature of the vintage. They all benefited from air (I tasted these bottles over two days) and should have a decade or so of longevity.

Richly layered with ripe raspberry, black olive and cherry tea notes, this full-bodied red sports tangy acidity and ample, polished tannins. Dried meat, savory spice, and mocha accents mark the lingering, iron-tinged finish. Syrah, Grenache, and Cinsault.

The Hissez O represents the pinnacle of the Domaine's production. It is from the rockiest soils at the top of the hill in the vineyards. Yields are the lowest and produce the most concentrated fruit. The Hissez O has a perfumed opulence with lavender, blueberry and smoked meat aromas. Reminiscent of a great Cote Rotie but at such a bargain comparatively. I'm not the only one who felt that way, several of my associates commented on the northern Rhone aspect of this wine. Meant for the cellar but equally delicious now, this is serious stuff worthy of your time.

Truly a "vin de garde" and an incredible value with that in mind, this Hissez O is the Domaine's top wine. It shows great concentration, big bold purple fruit and earth spicy. The tannin is much more prominent than the other wines, but ultimately remains silky and fine, which implies that you should drink this now. You shouldn't. If you can bear to keep your hands off it, this wine will provide vast rewards. Treat it like any of the finest Rhone offerings and you'll end up falling in love like we did.

Notes

The "Hissez O" is the pinnacle of production for the Domaine. Sourced from the highest altitude, lowest yielding parcel the wine is composed of 60% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 5% Cinsault. The Hissez O is also aged in large older demi-muid barrels adding richness and texture to the wine. As with all things Reserve d'O, the farming is certified both Ecocert Organic and Demeter Biodynamic. (Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Buyer)
