Reviewed April 2015Light orange. Intense red berry liqueur, blood orange and garrigue aromas are lifted and sharpened by suggestions of dusty minerals and gingery spices. Silky and concentrated, offering incisive redcurrant and bitter cherry flavors that expand on the back half. Shows a distinctly mineral, oily, almost saline quality that's reminiscent of big-time Chablis (yes, really!) and finishes with superb energy, thrust and length. Imagine what would happen if red grapes were planted in Montée de Tonnerre and then made into pink wine: that's pretty much what I did. Drink: 2016-2025 (JR)

The "Cuvée Speciale" is the older vines of the two Clos wines. You can even see it in the color of the wine with its depth and intensity. Make no mistake, this is still a light colored rosé. The "Speciale" has aromas of orange peel, fresh walnuts and a touch of salinity. On the palate there are notes of wet stone and white cherry. The length is long and reminds me of a cru Chablis but more red fruit notes. This is powerful stuff even for rosé. Capable of aging but drinkable now, I always buy six bottles. Four to drink and two to put away.
Notes
Clos Cibonne's special rosé bottling is 100% Tibouren sourced from 60+ year old vines instead of 30 years for the regular bottling. It is aged on the lees for 1 year before bottling, so it hits the market the year after the rosé wines from other estates. From the importer: "Intense color, on the nose it is spicy with hints of quince and roasted nuts. The palate is bold and fresh with a long finish."
