One of my perennial best buys is Marietta Cellars’ non-vintage blend of Zinfandel, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Syrah and a few other varietals. The current example, the non-vintage Old Vine Red Lot 62, is a 90,000-case cuvée that represents one of the finest value-priced wines in the United States. It exhibits excellent color, beautiful ripeness, lots of black and red fruits, earth and spice, and a savory, juicy, hedonistic mouthful of medium-bodied wine. With plenty of purity as well as character, this gorgeous blend should offer enjoyment over the next 2-3 years. (RP)

Marietta's NV Old Vine Red Lot 62 is one of the very best California wines readers will find for the money. Zinfandel plays the leading role in a hearty, racy red bursting at the seams with flavor. Sweet red cherries, flowers, cedar and new leather add the final notes of complexity. Brothers Jake and Scot Bilbro seem to have breathed new life into Marietta, one of Sonoma's historic wineries. Notes

Marietta utilizes the old vine pedigree of their fruit from across Sonoma and Mendocino counties to make a wine of substance and value that defies modern convention. This exuberantly bistro-styled wine has a dedicated following, but is also finding appeal with a new generation of savvy wine drinkers. Wine writer Jon Bonné explains it best in his 2013 book, The New California Wine: "It's immediately evident how much Old Vine Red trumps mass-market competitors that cost only a couple bucks less. It tastes like classic old-fashioned California table red, robust in that Zinfandel way, but a far cry form the generic and sugary confections against which is competes."
