Reviewed June 2011The 2007 Montefalco Sagrantino shows off layers of dark fruit, juniper berries and sweet medicinal herbs in a sumptuous expression of Sagrantino. All of the elements come together nicely here, as the hard Sagrantino tannins and some of grape's wildness have been tamed but without the loss of too much varietal character. A lush, refined finish rounds things out nicely. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019.

Dark ruby with bricky rim. Balsamic cherry with real depth and a little earthy. Elegant palate weight and big tannins. Quite pure fruit on the finish with a bitter, tannic edge. A little austere, but it has class.

Mocha and savory herb notes lead to a polished profile of roasted plum, cassis and licorice notes, as full yet fine-grained tannins emerge on the floral-tinged finish. Best from 2014 through 2020. (Web-only 2013)
