Very dark crimson with some evolution at the rim. Extremely hedonistic nose. Full, round and ripe. Nice little edge of pepper. Very positive and vigorous. Lots of sweetness on the front palate with neat, dry tannins and no excess of alcohol. Promising for the long term. 18/20 points (JR)

Made with fruit from their two estate vineyards, primarily Quinta da Madalena in the Rio Torto, the 1994 is a fine example from this highly regarded vintage—prior to 2011, the Douro's best. Dark fruit aromas show a nicely sweet/savory aspect, leading to a delicious, vinous mouthful of port: dark fruits, hints of red fruits, dark chocolate, coffee. This is port just hitting its stride that should drink well for some years to come. I would rank the 1994 Smith Woodhouse as one of our best values in vintage port.
