Reviewed January 2022A warm, sunny year produced this concentrated, elegant wine with refined aromas of ripe apple and quince, fresh hawthorn and a suggestion of mineral and toast. Supple and velvety in texture, it lacks nothing in substance or power to age for decades. The grapes are exclusively from vines in Avize, Le Mesnil, Oger, and Chouilly. A bit softer than the 2004 vintage, it is still a wine to seek out and should age well over at least the next decade. (CC)

The 2005 Comtes de Champagne is a deep, rich, full-bodied beauty that packs serious amounts of fruit and texture, while never seeming heavy or rustic. Loaded with notions of orchards fruits, toast, caramelized citrus and distinct minerality, it has a broad, expansive, yet fine mousse, beautiful mid-palate depth and a great, great finish. It’s well worth seeking out.

Out of magnum, the 2005 Comtes de Champagne is drinking very well indeed at nineteen years of age. It is funny, but I have drunk the 2006 vintage of Comtes several times in recent years, but had not tasted the 2005 version in nearly a decade. The wine offers up a pure and classic aromatic constellation of apple, pear, fresh-baked bread, chalky minerality, almond, white lilies, still a whisper of buttery oak and a topnote of gentle smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, fine mineral undertow, refined mousse and a long, poised and beautifully balanced finish. Fine, fine juice. 95

With just a touch of bottle age giving a toasty character, this impressive wine is already showing some maturity. That said, the apple and citrus character, the mineral tight texture and crisp acidity promise some aging. The wine conveys a sense of elegance, intensity and richness. Drink now, but the wine will also age. (RV)

The Comtes De Champagne is a benchmark blanc de blancs for a reason. Taittinger uses the best Grand Cru Chardonnay that they can get to make a small amount of the most decadent and age-worthy Champagne available. The 2005 is open knit and incredibly delicious now with plenty of toasty brioche and energetic citrus. It should also last quite a long time!
