Reviewed October 2016All bottles from the new Classic Penedès category for sparkling wines have to carry a vintage, so what used to be non-vintage wines have been transformed into vintage ones, as is the case with the 2013 999 Rosado Brut Nature. This is a blend of an obscure clone of Xarello called Xarello Vermell and Pinot Noir that matured in bottle for a minimum of 15 months. The carbonic gas feels quite powerful and invaded my nostrils as soon as I put my nose in the glass, denoting youth. The aromas combine rose petals and red berries, not terribly complex, but clean and with a straightforward palate with abundant bubbles. Simple, but satisfying.

We're incredibly lucky that our buyer Joe isn't greedy. I could easily see this spectacular wine selling for twice the price without anyone blinking an eye. But instead we get this spectacular rosé, one of the least expensive in the store, for a minuscule price. I'm not complaining. It's brut nature but not austere. Lovely aromatics of fresh red fruit and exotic teas. Superbly drinkable and refreshing, plus at this price you can just throw it around without thinking about it too much. Gifting this to everyone until it runs out.

Can Mayol is one of our favorite Spanish direct import properties. Working organically, and employing biodynamic treatments on their property, they produce sparkling Penedes wines of real expression and stunning purity. The 999 is a blend of Pinot Noir and Xarel-lo Vermell (rare red skinned mutation of Xarel-lo), full of crisp, tangy red fruit flavors and without a hint of sugar (dosage) added.
