Reviewed October 2008The 2001 Barolo Riserva Vigna dei Dardi is a powerful, dense wine loaded with dark, primary fruit. The oak aromas and flavors are well-integrated although elements of the French oak tannins remain. This muscular, explosive Barolo offers notable depth, if not the complexity of its sibling aged in cask. It will require patience, but this, too, is a gem. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2026.

(sampled from tank) Good deep red. Liqueur-like raspberry and rose petal on the confectionery, perfumed nose. This has wonderful fruit in the mouth, with a lovely creaminess of tex ture but also firm grip. Floral, rich and sweet, but not yet expansive. "Not yet complete" is the way Fantino describes this still-young vintage. Should prove to be the best of the '99-'01 trio.
