Everything you could possibly want in a Palo Cortado, a wine evenly poised between Amontillado and Oloroso. Toasted and buttery, with walnut notes on the nose leading into a resoundingly bold palate of honey, bitter caramel and a lift of saltiness. The power is carefully controlled through to an elegant finish. (SE)

The amber-colored NV Antique Palo Cortado has a clean, changing, lifted nose of white chocolate, orange marmalade, almonds and incense, while the balanced palate comes through quite intense, sharp, with good acidity and length. (LG)

A dry, piercing style, with a lovely orange blossom note that gives way quickly to sea salt, dried orange peel, walnut, bitter almond and cardamom accents. This offers a bright, brisk finish. Drink now.

Toffeed-fruit sweetness on the nose but tastes bone dry. With tangy apricots reduced right down. Very pointed wine, unexpectedly juicy but with a sharp focus in the middle of the rounded silky texture thanks to a touch of residual sugar (not consumed because of the shorter time under flor). Tangy bitter-orange finish. Super-complex and almost sharp in that tangy flavour, showing the Fino character in the salty aftertaste. 18/20 points. (JH)

Notes

Lots of attention has recently been placed on the historic region and stunning wines of Jérez. Given all the critical press articles, enthusiasm from restaurant wine professionals, and even a serious new book on the topic, the spotlight has generally missed Rey Fernando de Castilla. Now that we finally have the wines available to us in California, it is our intention to change that and spread the word about this wonderful house. Founded in 1999 by Jan Petterson, a Norwegian who is a long-time veteran of the Sherry trade, these are excellent Sherries across the board, particularly the antique line featuring some very old, carefully kept up soleras. Petterson has proven to be quite the visionary, placing his bets on very high quality, limited production wines a good decade prior to the rise in interest in top quality, collectible Sherry. These wines are all of the highest quality and come highly recommended. (Joe Manekin, K&L Sherry buyer)
