Reviewed November 2011***#90 of the Top 100 Wines of 2011***
A hint of reduction quickly gives way here to a wild mix of bramble, steeped blackberry, roasted fig, melted licorice, tar and dark tapenade notes, which all weave together through a singed iron finish that shows serious length. Syrah with 10 percent Viognier. Best from 2012 through 2022. 100 cases imported. (JM)
Notes
Former Guigal assistant Jean-Michel Stephan has struck out on his own, making wine from eight acres of old vines in the southern part of the Côte-Rôtie, mostly from Côteaux de Tupin and Côteaux de Bassenon, two hillside lieux-dits. He follows French natural wine guru Jules Chauvet, eschewing chemicals and farming his steep, hillside vines organically, by hand (though he is not certified organic). This bottling is a blend of Syrah and Viognier from both terroirs and is incredibly seductive.
