Blanton's Original Single Barrel Bourbon Whiskey (1 bottle limit) (750ml)

SKU #630018 96 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Bold and well structured, this Bourbon features warming vanilla and caramel accented by orange peel, stone fruit and a dry baking-spice finish. Sip it with a chunk of ice, or mix up a round of juleps. The trademark round, faceted bottle with the horse-topped cork is perfect for Derby Day. (KN) Inner quote mark (9/2014)

Whisky Advocate

Outer quote mark Oh, that rickhouse smell: charred oak, leather, vanilla, and a slight hint of coconut. Then it’s caramel, toasted walnuts, pecans, pine nuts, and moon pie, with hints of black licorice and cumin. Strong tobacco and ginger notes present themselves just before a delightful finish with hints of crème brûlée and vanilla custard. This is a regular sipper in my house. (FM, Fall 2017) Inner quote mark

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Custard, pepper, orange peel and grassy rye fill the nose. In the mouth, it's a breakneck ride: an initial rush of dry corn and grassy rye, a broad wave of sweeter corn in the middle, and a finish of sugar and rough spearmint. One of the first specialty Bourbons, and still one of the best. Inner quote mark (2/2012)

K&L Notes

ONE BOTTLE LIMIT. MULTIPLE ORDERS EVEN FROM DIFFERENT LOCATIONS MAY BE SUBJECT TO CANCELLATION OF ALL ORDERS. The nose is very deep and satisfying. The taste has a masterful start with powerful dry vanilla notes in perfect harmony with strong hints of honey and caramel. The long, creamy caramel holds the fort until some late soft peppers arrive to spice things up. The underlying dryness amid the spice and honey really makes for a bourbon that should suit all tastes. "Double Gold Medal" winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2011, 2012 and 2013; Gold 2016.

You don't need to necessarily hear it from me that Blanton's Single Barrel Bourbon is easily a fantastic whiskey. It's a well known fact. But I will say, while I'm not the biggest whiskey drinker, Blanton's may easily take me over to the dark side. No joke. Every time I pour myself a glass (neat of course) I immediately want another pour as soon as I'm finished, and now I just want to know what other fun small batch whiskeys I can get myself into. If you're not the biggest bourbon drinker but you're curious enough to try a nice one and it so happens to be available, get your hands on Blanton's.

The special Blanton's single barrel has been a staple of any solid back bar since its release in 1984. Truly a pioneering effort from the new owners of the George T Stagg distillery as it was known at the time, Blanton's was indeed the first single barrel to be marketed by any Kentucky distillery since before prohibition. Despite coming from the standard "Buffalo Trace" recipe, Blanton's is unique for being drawn from Warehouse H, the only warehouse on the property built from metal. The metal warehouses absorb more heat and therefor add something extra special to the aging liquid inside. Appropriately enough this warehouse was commissioned by Albert Blanton, one of the early owners of this very old distillery. Despite spending decades under the radar the recent explosion in interest in bourbon has hit the Blanton's stocks hard. Production on this brand is capped due to the single barrel requirements, each barrel must be dumped and bottles filled by hand. Needless to say, we've had a very hard time keeping it on our shelves, often seeing several months without a single bottle to sell. More recently, the product has been allocated to levels similar to the ultra-popular Weller brands, i.e. 12 bottles per week. Blanton's being a single barrel is never quite exactly the same, but it's ALWAYS delicious. Certain bottles, coming from the cherry casks, are absolutely exquisite. Expect rich caramelized sugar, strong notes of vanilla, and spicy dried citrus peel. The palate typically exhibits powerful notes of baking spice, cloves, cinnamon, and soft dried fruits with that rich sweetness in the background to balance the intensity of the spice. An American classic.

Blanton's is always my first choice when someone asks me for a "nice" bottle of Bourbon. It's about as "nice" as Bourbon gets. Extra richness, a smooth and silky finish, and an elegant bottle. It's still the one great value in today's high-end Bourbon market.
