Kerin O'Keefe

Reviewed December 2025
The compelling Conti Costanti 2021 Brunello captivates with pronounced aromas of fragrant purple flower, eucalyptus, Mediterranean brush and perfumed berry. All about class and extreme finesse, the elegant palate delivers succulent wild raspberry, crushed Marasca cherry, spiced orange zest and star anise set against a backbone of fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity lends balance and great intensity. Year after year Andrea Costanti turns out what are among the very best wines from Montalcino, and the 2021 is no exception, it’s an absolute stunner with great aging potential. (KO)

ne of Montalcino’s most historic, the Costanti estate has been in the hands of Andrea Costanti since 1983. Year after year he makes decisive, ageworthy Brunello from his north- to northwest-facing vineyards just east of town. The 2021 is no exception and will require time in the cellar before disclosing its deeply embedded intricacies. Discreet whiffs of beeswax and flint eventually cede to violet and dark-toned fruit. The palate is equally restrained and tight yet precisely sculpted. A core of wild forest berry is well corseted, all elevated by a salivating crunchiness.

The Conti Costanti 2021 Brunello di Montalcino shows fine complexity, opening with dark fruit, blue flower and an attractive note of sweet mint. Chalky tannins are well integrated and work in tandem with tangy acidity to give the wine energy and poise. The palate is streamlined and silky, favoring balance over excess weight. The wine matures for 12 months in medium-toast Allier tonneaux, followed by 24 months in Slavonian oak cask. The warm, luminous conditions of the 2021 vintage are expressed here with clarity and restraint, emphasizing aromatic precision and freshness. Nice job. (ML)

Vinous

Review Date: 11/2025
The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino is darkly inward in its youthful state, brooding and tense with tobacco, minty herbs, cedary spice, plum and nuances of black cherry. Soft textures wash across the energetic palate as mineral-inflected red berry fruits saturate. Structured and incredibly long, the 2021 leaves the cheeks puckering amidst fine-grained tannins and a contrasting accent of sour citrus. (EG)

The name Brunello was all but born on this hill. In 1870, Count Tito Costanti took an 1865 wine from Colle al Matrichese to the provincial exhibition in Siena and called it Brunello, one of the first to do so, and the family has made wine here since at least 1555. Andrea Costanti, a geology student when his great-uncle handed him the estate in 1982, has run it ever since with a geologist’s attention to soil and a declared distaste for too much oak. The vineyards sit a mile east of the town at 400 to 450 metres on galestro, and the 2021 was fermented in steel, then given twelve months in Allier tonneaux and twenty-four in Slavonian oak casks. Nothing about it is loud. In the glass, it pours a lustrous mid ruby. The nose is all noble restraint at first, then opens to purple flowers, eucalyptus and sweet mint, Mediterranean brush, perfumed wild raspberry and a cool thread of tobacco and cedar. On the palate, it is medium-bodied and tense, with crushed Marasca cherry, spiced orange zest and star anise set against chalky, fine-grained tannins and tangy acidity, and a long, mineral finish still folded in on itself. O’Keefe gave it 99 and called Andrea’s wines among the very best in Montalcino year after year; Larner, Vinous and Spectator all sit at 95. At $99.99 against $130 elsewhere, from one of the two estates that gave Brunello its name, this is the bottle of the 2021 campaign to put six of in the cellar. Drink 2027 to 2043.

Notes

The 2021 Conti Costanti Brunello di Montalcino is a monumental and classic expression of Sangiovese from one of Montalcino's founding estates, capturing the energy and structure of this highly anticipated vintage. The nose is deep, complex, and intensely savory, with profound aromas of dark cherry, wild plum, and dried red rose, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and iron-rich earth. On the palate, it is full-bodied and immensely structured, driven by a dense core of fruit framed by firm, ultra-refined tannins and a vibrant, energetic acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, powerful, and mineral-driven, a testament to the traditional, long-lived style of Costanti. This is a cellar-worthy masterpiece that will demand and reward patience.
