The bottled 2022 PSI follows the character of the sample I tasted last year: it's clean, expressive and open. It's perfumed, elegant, floral and quite attractive and does not transmit any heat. In fact, it has contained ripeness and around 13.8% alcohol. They have improved the selection tremendously, and the wine has gained in precision; it's better each year. There is something that reminds me of the old vintages of Pesquera (1994 and before), with notes of orange peel and aromatic herbs. It's medium-bodied, has fine tannins and very good freshness. Only 20% of the volume matured in barrel and the rest in large oak vats (2,000-, 5,000- and 10,000-liter ones), and the élevage is quite respectful of the wine. This should be readily available, as they produced 360,000 bottles in 2022. It's detailed and hand-crafted, real wine in good volume, coming from 700 plots of old vines, all in all around 8% Garnacha. Despite the conditions of the year, this has to be one of the finest vintages of PSI. (LG)

The numbers are impressive, showing what a successful brand this has become: 200 hectares, 500 growers, 700 lots and 360,000 bottles. Pairing Tinto Fino and 8% Garnacha, most of it from vineyards to the east of Aranda, this is vibrant, focused and subtly wooded, all pomegranate, black cherry and mountain herbs on the palate, with nicely understated 5% new wood.

The 2022 PSI hails from the Sorian side of Ribera del Duero. Ripe plum, cherry and herbal aromas mingle with a balsamic touch, soft cedar and a hint of prune. The palate is juicy and creamy in texture, defined by firm, fine-grained tannins and moderate structure. Concentration comes from the old vines, while lively acidity balances the fine tannins. A solid example of Ribera Soriana. (JH)

Though not Spanish by birth, Peter Sisseck is a legendary figure in Spain. After training in Bordeaux and California, he planted roots in Spain and established the now very famous Dominio de Pingus in Ribero del Duero. PSI is a relatively new project by Sisseck, meant to preserve the historic old bushvine vineyards in the region. The 2022 PSI is mainly Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) along with a small percentage of Garnacha – unusual for the region – as well as the white variety Albillo. Sisseck is committing to preserving these old vines as well, not just the Tinto Fino. Unlike Pingus, which pushes the boundaries of Tinto Fino’s power, Psi aims to express the region’s soul and reflect Ribera’s diverse heritage with a more elegant, balanced expression. It is fermented in concrete and aged mainly in large wooden casks. In the winery, Sisseck eschews many of the modern techniques and instead focuses on simple, traditional winemaking techniques, such as long, gentle macerations to get the most delicate extraction possible. The result is a somewhat restrained, compact style of Ribero del Duero, very black-fruited with wild blackberry and black currant. Faint earthy undertones are woven through the core of the wine, but the dominant character wine is elegance and power, knitted together in equal parts. The old vines have clearly provided a lot of raw intensity and depth, but the palate feel has finesse, with well-integrated tannins. This is such an exciting project from Sisseck and one that seems to get better every vintage.

Notes

Named after winemaker Peter Sisseck’s childhood nickname, Pingus quickly caught the attention of the leading wine critics shortly after its debut in 1995. It rocketed to the top of collectors’ lists and today remains one of the most sought-after wines in Spain, if not the world, setting the bar for old vine Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) in Ribero del Duero. PSI is a relatively new project, launched in 2006 by Sisseck. Named after the 23rd letter of the Greek alphabet, PSI aims to preserve old bush-vine vineyards in Ribero del Duero. In this part of Spain, growers traditionally were paid for their fruit by weight, meaning they were rewarded for producing more grapes rather than better grapes, giving them little motivation to limit yields. Opportunities to purchase these old vineyards, however, were limited, so Sisseck struck upon the idea of working directly with the farmers and paying instead by quality, rather than by weight, with incentives to further improve the quality. His team now routinely teaches pruning methods and sustainable farming methods, sourcing fruit from over 700 small plots spread across 20 villages in Ribero del Duero to create the blend for PSI.
