Neon yellow in color, this has a fetching nose of tree blooms, kumquats and spiced tea. The invigorating acidity clings to the mid-weight palate and gives this wine inviting freshness. Entirely from Côte de Bréchain, this was also purchased in 2014, along with the Mont de Milieu and Montmains parcels.

Half has been made in a concrete egg and half in 500 litre wood. Not racked, but the sample is representative. A little troubled and lots of gas still. Mid lemon yellow. The bouquet suggests some concentration of fruit. There is a softer succulence, a ripe flesh on the palate, that is one typical facet of Montée de Tonnerre, then a long generous finish. Drink from 2027-2035.

Like the Vaillons version of this wine, the Montee de Tonnerre has an exquisite pedigree. Also like the Vaillons, Gautheron has produced an incredible bargain for this type of quality. As is the nrom with Montee de Tonnerre, there is a nicely plush spiced apple fruit with some green pear and vanillin oak in the mix. After the initial ripe juiciness, there is a nice lingering finish of moderate acidity and freshness. So well done!

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Extra! What a nose – more dimensions here. Super volume in the mouth – pushed by some retained CO2 – but the energy and juiciness work beautifully in tandem – only in the middle flavours a fleeting hint barrel – that’s a great wine for sure!" (01/2024)
