The 2018 Pinot Noir Lester Family Vineyard is fabulous. The best elements of the Big Basin style come together in a Pinot that has it all: soaring aromatics, deep fruit and plenty of backing structure. Some of the 2018 Pinots are quite giving today, but not the Lester. It needs at least a few years in bottle to fully come together. Dark, brooding and mysterious, the 2018 will have much to say when the time comes. (AG)

Mulberries, dried flowers, forest floor, spice, and herbes de Provence-like notes emerge from the 2018 Pinot Noir Lester Family Vineyard, a medium-bodied, charming, sweetly fruited beauty with ripe tannins and a great finish. It offers more fruit and opulence than the other releases here yet still has some classic Santa Cruz Mountain structure. It has a solid decade of prime drinking ahead of it.

Slightly tart raspberry and red plum skin aromas are sprinkled in herbal forest floor scents, cracked pepper and pine needle on the nose of this energetic wine. Bay leaf leads the herbal palate, where more tangy plum and rounder melon rind flavors align. (MK)

Prudy Foxx farms this vineyard in the hills of Corralitos, a parcel planted in 1999 three miles from Monterey Bay. Bradley Brown encouraged the wine’s cool ripeness in his 2018, a pinot noir that takes time in the glass to show itself. At first earthy, dense and floral, its lively energy begins to take off, like a run along a forest trail, the ground soft with pine needles, the air lively with woodlands in bloom. Decant it for wild mushroom risotto.

I think Lester Vineyard in the Corralitos sub-region of the Santa Cruz Mountains has a pretty good claim to Grand Cru status. Over the years many of California's top winemakers have sought out the renowned Pinot Noir from Lester for its distinctive character and nuanced expression of the varietal. This beautiful vineyard is nestled into the foothills just a few miles from the Monterey Bay. The ocean dramatically effects this site moderating temperatures and often cloaking the vines under a morning layer of fog. The numerous clones of Pinot Noir planted in small blocks send their roots down into very sandy, almost powdery soils. They are farmed by legendary Santa Cruz Mountain viticulturist Prudy Foxx who just completed her 40th vintage growing grapes for top vineyards across the region. Earlier this year I was able to walk the vineyard with Prudy and I was stunned with level of detail and precision in the farming. The tiny clusters of fruit were pristine and the vines in perfect balance. Big Basin have received precious fruit from Lester for many years and believe it to be one of the most perfect sites for Pinot Noir in California. The 2018 combines heritage selections of Pinot Noir Mt. Eden and Swan with some Dijon Clone 667. The wine has a wonderfully complex nose the swings back and forth between bright red fruits, cherry, ripe raspberry, bramble, to earth, truffle, forest floor and dried porcini. Such a fascinating interplay between bright, juicy fruit but also so much savory, umami quality. Berries and dry leaves, tree bark, woodsy spices. Layer after layer of complexity. Silky tannins, a nice weight and concentration on the palate from these low-yielding almost entirely dry-farmed vines. A true Pinot lovers wine with so much going one and many years of truly fascinating drinking ahead of it. Don't miss our 50% off Insider's Advantage special price!

Big Basin makes delicious, organically farmed, minimal intervention wines, but what I love is their consistency. Throughout their lineup of reds, one can expect it's distinctive bright acidity, lively red fruits, and distinctive dried floral notes. This 100% whole cluster Pinot Noir showcases flavors of fresh cranberries, crunchy red plums, raspberries, bing cherries, pomegranate, hibiscus, dried rose petals, clove, and potting soil. Light, vibrant, with a persistent, refreshing finish. Great on it's own, but will elevate many types of poultry based dishes.

This is an impressive Pinot that clearly shows the pedigree of its original retail. With red florals and notes of cola in a perfumed aroma, it carries rich but bright flavors built around a core of red fruits, red plum and raspberry. Kept fresh with a thread of mouthwatering acidity, it carries through a long finish with a touch of spice. This dynamic Pinot Noir is flat-out delicious, but also presents a remarkable complexity that shows one nuance after another. I'd be thrilled to have a few bottles of this around, as it's a serious wine but also has plenty of polish that will also easily impress friends and family.

Notes

Lester Family Vineyards in the small coastal town of Corralitos produces some of the most revered Pinot Noir in the region. The vines, on gentle slopes in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, are only a few miles from the Monterey Bay and see almost daily fog throughout the growing season. The soils are very sandy with some clay loam mixed in. The vineyard is farmed organically by legendary viticulturist Prudy Foxx. Big Basin gets a few different clones from the vineyard: Mt. Eden selection, Swan Selection, and Dijon Clone 667. The fruit is ferment entirely whole cluster using only native yeast. After fermentation the wine spends 18 month is mostly neutral French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
