K&L Notes

The area of Fronton lies in the southwest of France, near more famous regions like Madiran and Cahors but the area has a distinctive character all its own. Located between the Tarn and Garonne rivers, the region is rich with clay, gravel and silty soils. The main grape in the region, Negrette excels in this area and as a grape variety is distinctly its own. Chateau Laurou sits just a few miles outside of the village of Fronton. The winds that come through the valley, and the hot dry summers allow for easier organic cutlivation. "Les Complices" which means accomplices is a blend of 60% Negrette and 40% Syrah. \It is aged all in large tank to preserve the characteristics of the grape varieties. A perfume of violents, red fruits and minerality make for a truly pleasurable regional wine.

Drink Negrette and you will have nothing to regret! This perfumed, supple grape carries its history shrouded in mystery, as little is really known about its place of origin. But it found a welcome home of its own in Southwest France, notably in the Fronton appellation north of Toulouse. Bursting with vivid aromas of violets, damp earth and wildflowers, it also can reveal a slightly feral note, but adding 35% Syrah to the blend shapes its growl and gives it more balance and structure. This velvety, friendly and fruity wine will pair well with grilled meats and charbroiled chicken, and received a whopping 96 points from the folks at Decanter.

Let's talk about Fronton! Not an area that most people are familiar with and the main grape there is called Negrette. Fronton is near the city of Toulouse, which is an epicenter for the wines of Southwest France, often referred to as the Sud-Ouest. Regions like Cahors, Madiran, Marcillac and Gaillac are nearby and each has grape varieties that it specializes in. And, Fronton is focused on Negrette which has a lighter less tannic edge than more famous nearby grapes like Malbec (from Cahors) and Tannat (from Madiran) as well as a less herbal tone than the Fer Servadou/Mansois of nearby Marcillac. Negrette has mineral tones, spice notes and a Merlot-like fleshiness when it is aged in primarily concrete or stainless steel tanks. It is often blended and makes a great teammate with Syrah, hence the name "Les Complices" or the accomplices. The Laurou is a vibrant and pretty wine that makes for a great introduction to the region. Aromas of violets, candied raspberries, redcurrants and licorice lead to a nicely saturated palate of richness. Tannins and acidity balance the wine beautifully and give you both a sensation of Bordeaux and Rhone wines...but something just a little different. At its price, the Laurou makes for one of the best drinking reds in the store right now.
