Reviewed September 2023The 2020 Malbec also includes 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, sourced from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley. It was aged for 15 months in foudres, resulting in a purple color. The nose presents plums, violets, sage and bitter orange. Dry and juicy on the palate, it moves with a nimble flow lifted by balanced acidity. The apparent absence of tannins contributes to its voluminous and weightless mouthfeel. (JH)

Ripe black cherries, spice, lavender and stones to the nose. Dusty, firm tannins on the flavorful, medium- to full-bodied palate, showing excellent mid-palate tension.

The 2020 Malbec shows a little more generous, reflecting a warmer and dry year, with black fruit, spices and herbs, a medium to full-bodied palate and some chalky tannins. It has grip and should do well with food. It matured in 100-year-old foudres for 15 months (LG)

Plush, ripe, supple and textured, El Enemigo’s Malbec also contains 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Very lightly wooded in older oak, it has succulent blackberry fruit, some tannic grip and a spicy, savoury finish from 100% whole bunches.

This is elevated Malbec. There is more wine here than you would expect for the money, with no superfluous winemaking. The nose is deep and pure. Cherry is the dominant fruit tone with plums, pluots, and dark berries. There is a soft violet lift along that is tempered with mountain herbs and scrub note, subtle spice and an earthy stony undertone. The palate has a ripe core of fruit, it is still cherry driven but those darker fruit and berries hold more sway. This is a Malbec with structure, the tannins are soft and present and there is fresh and lively edge to its acidity. There is just enough presence and tension but there are no edges, this glides over your tongue. It finishes with pluots and dark berries, with a hint of bitter herbs and dusty stones. This is a next level wine. It has polish, depth, purity with zero pretension. This has the charm and ease that you expect from Malbec with the depth and sophistication that Enemigo brings to all their wines.

Here is a textbook Malbec. A plush nose of boysenberry and red cassis. On the palate, also plush with these fruits (also, red plum) BUT it also has some very nice acidity and brightness. A very nice balance of both worlds. Like there wonderful chardonnay, this is a super solid wine of great flavor and value.
Notes
Formerly Bodegas Aleanna, this joint project of Alejandro Vigil and Adrianna Catena. El Enemigo makes some of the most exciting, textured and pure wines from Mendoza. Sourced from high elevation in the Uco Valley, mostly Gualtallary. The yield are incredibly low, a ton or less per acre. This is a Malbec with a small addition of Cabernet Franc. It was aged for 15 monthes in foudre. Lightly wooded, aromatic and pure fruit with soft tannins and a fresh clen finish.
