Notes
Distilling at Lagavulin on Islay’s southern coast dates back to at least 1742, when illicit whisky was made in the area. John Johnston officially founded the distillery in 1816, near the ruins of Dunyvaig Castle on Lagavulin Bay. Local peat, Atlantic air and notably slow distillation help shape its deeply smoky, maritime single malt. The Distillers Edition is double-matured in ex-bodega Pedro Ximénez cask wood, adding intense raisiny sweetness to Lagavulin’s powerful smoke. Bottled at 43% ABV, it layers peat, vanilla, roasted malt, dried fruit, coffee and a salty tang, with an exceptionally long finish of fruit, peat and oak. A multi-year award winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the International Wine and Spirit Competition, the International Spirit Competition and the Scotch Whisky Masters, it has also earned Best Islay honors at the World Whiskies Awards.
