Explosively alive, this dry mavrodaphne hails from Vlathi Sclavos’s biodynamic estate on the island of Cephalonia. It’s a ripe and spicy fusillade of juicy cherry-tomato pulp, tobacco, cocoa, pine, bay leaf and lavender. Seventy-year-old vines dig through a scrabbly scree of limestone to deliver plenty of concentration in their fruit. There’s a little Brett when this is first opened, but the volume and complexity of the fruit quickly subsume it. For barbecued chicken thighs, or chili. (SS)

The Sclavos Monambeles is a bold and hearty red made from Mavrodaphne on the island of Cephalonia (Kefalonia). It is filled with rich gamy meat flavors, surrounded by blackberry fruit and new saddle leather. This is hefty wine that demands richer braised meat dishes like lamb shoulder or short ribs. Still youthful, but with a hefty hourlong decant it will unfold beautifully to give you that old school European vibe.

Notes

Sclavos, as a winery, has taken a wholistic approach to their winemaking and vineyard practices. Demeter certified, a robust diversity of flora and fauna in and around the vineyards plus low intervention techniques in the cellar are the practices they use to arrive at such a singularly mineral-driven style of whites and reds. The Monambeles is 100% Mavrodaphne from the area of Monambeles from vines over 70 years of age. All native yeast fermentation, long extraction and aged in large oak casks before bottling. This pure old vine fruit and minimal intervention winemaking make for a powerful and rustic red. *Biodynamic* *Natural Wine*
