From 40-year-old self-rooted vines that are organically farmed, the 2021 Pinot Noir Carter Vineyard is a ripe ruby hue and offers notes of grenadine, candied roses, and cinnamon. Its tannins are ripe and fine, and it fills the palate with ripe red fruit, apricot, and notes of crushed stone along with mouthwatering salinity. (AF)

The 2021 Carter Vineyard bottling of pinot noir from Kelley Fox is a beautiful young wine. Kelley retained about forty percent whole clusters for the Carter Vineyard cuvée in 2021 and raised the wine for ten months, all in older oak casks. The bouquet is deep, pure and nicely black fruity in personality, wafting from the glass in a mix of black cherries, dark berries, coffee bean, a complex base of soil, sweet stem tones, incipient notes of cola, rose petals and plenty of upper register smokiness. On the palate the wine is elegant, full-bodied and very transparent in personality, with a lovely core of black fruit, fine-grained tannins, lovely focus and grip and a long, seamlessly balanced and complex finish. This is quite tightly-knit when first opened and really demands a bit of time to stretch its wings, but once it opens up, its future beauty is very, very easy to appreciate. (JG) 93+

Magenta in color, the 2021 Pinot Noir Carter Vineyard is spicy with dusty dried cherries and strawberries complemented by hints of lavender and clove. Seductively round yet full of energy, the 2021 rushes the palate with masses of tart wild berry fruit and mineral tones guided by juicy acidity. This finishes with remarkable freshness, only lightly tannic, with a pleasant tannic crunch framing the experience beautifully. (EG)

Notes

Josh Raynolds for Vinous on the producer: "Kelley Fox... has been making some of the Willamette Valley’s most finely detailed, perfumed, unadorned and elegant Pinots for some time now. While she is deeply rooted in the Dundee Hills, especially the legendary Maresh vineyard, she’s beginning to branch out, and in this vintage, she produced her first wines (both outstanding) from the famed Carter and Canary Hill sites in the Eola-Amity Hills. Her work with fruit from McMinnville’s famed Hyland vineyard is extremely impressive as well. Word has gotten out and the wines have become increasingly more difficult to track down, so this is yet another winery where going directly to the source is a smart move. It’s a two-person operation, so the odds are high that you’ll be dealing with Kelley herself." (02/2022)
