Dornoch Distillery Redacted (Thompson) Bros 6 Year Old "TB/BSW" Blended Scotch Whisky (700ml)

SKU #1695464

The beauty of the Thompson Brothers is that they're willing to take risks. This offering is indeed a risky proposition for a bottler, the very reason the big guys were willing to let it go. On paper it reads like a very expensive blended scotch. But why add an age statement, when a 12-year-old Johnnie Walker is a fraction of the price? The age statement tells the entire story here and our friends at Dornoch care little for artificial labels and quality statements, all they care about is getting damn good whisky into your glass for an incredible price. So, when one of the largest players in the single malt game came to them with a large vatting of 99% sherried 12-year-old of the highest caliber that had accidentally been mingled with a tiny bit of 6-year-old grain, the boys didn't hesitate and neither did we. This is a throwback to a bygone era where 50 or so dollars was all you needed to get top quality well aged malt. We can split hairs about the nomenclature, but what we care about most at K&L is flavor and the TB/BSW over-delivers in an incredible way. Easily bests 12-year-old single malts that trade for $30-40 premium over this splendid find. No other Scotch on the market today offers so much value, so if you're willing to not judge a book by its cover, we're willing to keep selling this excellent bottle at an extremely affordable price!

This special batch of scotch is perhaps the most incredible value that we've seen from Scotland in sometime. Our friends, Phil and Simon Thompson have a way of getting the industry behind them. I'm not sure exactly how they do it, but it maybe thanks to them being two of the grooviest guys in the Highlands. Maybe it's years behind the bar at the Dornoch hotel getting to know the players in the industry on face to face basis. Either way, doors have seemingly opened for the dynamic duo and the TB/BSW is maybe the most rarified. On paper, it looks like a terrible value though. "6 year old blended scotch for more than $50, these men are PIRATES," I can hear my customers yelling. But since all of our customers are thoughtful and discerning they'll know immediately that it cannot be correct. And indeed it is not! 99.9% of this is single malt from the very highest high point of Highland sherry aged single malt. . A tiny dribble of 6 year old grain (supposedly a blending room error) and we've got one of the greatest scotch bottlings of the new era. Let's taste it! The color is lovely burnished/chestnut oloroso hue. Immediately the nose offers gorgeous sherry character full of dried plum, rich toffee, roasted espresso and baking spices. With air, it adds more Christmas cake, candied citrus, raisins and maple syrup. On the palate it's very rich and textured pushing forward with the deep dried fruit (fig and plums), gorgeous toasted spices, and deep roasted malt character. It loves a drop of water honestly, which add even more dense fruit and softens the spices slightly. But not more than a tiny drop in my opinion. Bottled at a perfect 92 proof without chillfiltration or coloring of course. This should be most sherry lovers table malt. You cannot afford not to have it around all the time.
