Reviewed November 2023In a tall bottle with a white label, the Casa d'Ambra 2022 Ischia Biancolella has lots of rich orchard fruit and pear with light accents of cinnamon or pine nut. Those spicy notes come directly from the skins, because this blend of 85% Biancolella with smaller parts Forastera and San Lunardo grapes sees stainless steel only. This hot vintage delivers creamy, mid-weight concentration with a finish that is driven by marine layers and salty mineral tones. Fruit is sourced from different sides of the island of Ischia, and 180,000 bottles were made. (RP)

The 2022 Biancolella opens slowly, first showing crushed stone and lime zest nuances. Coaxing brings about green apple and subtle ginger aromas. It’s deeply textural, almost creamy in feel, and lifted in weight. A core of stimulating acidity and minerals add balance as sweet inner florals enhance ripe orchard fruits. The 2022 finishes remarkably fresh, airy and impactful, leaving a subtle sour tinge and salty nuances that last up to a minute. (EG)
