2021 Desire Lines "Winds of Change" California Syrah

A stunning cool-climate Syrah that is explosively aromatic and packed with deep flavors and textures with savory, smoky, elements in spades. I love Cody Rasmussen's work with Syrah, he seems to pull out the most evocative, complex elements from the grape but at the same time delivers rich, satisfying mid-palate fruit and supreme drinkability. Sourced mostly (68%) from Santa Barbara County. Focused on cold, windy sites with sandy soils. While Cody likes to keep his exact fruit sources close to his chest...his day job, making wines for Bedrock Wine Co., suggests to me they likely include the same iconic vineyards Bedrock work with including: White Hawk, Presqu'ile, Bien Nacido, and Nolan. The fruit is fermented with some whole-cluster inclusion and 1% Viognier co-fermented with the Syrah. The wine ages in entirely neutral, large 500L Puncheons. It's stunning stuff, I love the elegant power this wine has; wonderful depth and dense fruit but without sacrificing any of the aromatic lift and savory intensity that makes cool-climate Syrah so compelling. Exceptional value for a boutique, hand-crafted wine of this quality.
