Reviewed January 2022More cassis, violets, flowers, and black pepper notes emerge from the 2020 Ventoux Persia, and it's more lively and elegant on the palate, with high yet integrated acidity and very fine, polished tannins. While the 2019 is a bigger, richer wine, the 2020 is more elegant and finesse-driven.

A wild nose of forest berries, dried herbs, tar and cloves. Medium to full body with finely grained tannins. Creamy and well-balanced with a well-integrated structure here. Velvety and generous with juicy berries towards the peppery, focused finish.

The Persia is a spectacular Syrah forward Rhone blend. Showing loads of tobacco, spice and fruit, this wine will enjoy a vaunted place at the dinner table. Pure pleasure in a glass!

Cooler nocturnal temperatures are ideal for cultivating Syrah, allowing for the soulful presence of savory, more exotic flavors in the wine. Add the reductive, feral nature of old-vine Mourvèdre to the mix and you have something special, full of ripe black cherry, cocoa, thyme, and wild strawberry notes. Aged for 12 months in new oak barrels. A step above the Fondreche rouge in its finessed fruit and more polished character.

Located in the foothills of Mont Ventoux lies one of the top producers in the Ventoux region of the Rhone Valley - Domaine de Fondreche. In the shadow of the mountain, the vines are an average age of 40 years planted in chalky clay over limestone. The Persia is predominantly Syrah and is aged in large oak barrels. Year-in-year-out, this remains one of the great bottlings of Ventoux.
