I'm pretty much going to buy any Pulteney that comes my way. It's just such a great distillery and thanks to it being relatively under the radar, it's remained somewhat affordable. This exceptional single bourbon barrel was bottled in November of 2021 and distilled in June of 2011. Not old by any means but a pure expression of Pulteney that we rarely get to see and certainly very affordable compared to what the distillery is charging for similar single cask stocks. The color is pale gold. A gorgeous nose of fresh baked sour dough, lemon pith, salted citrus and gooseberries. On the palate, it's surprisingly full bodied with a wild vanilla bean note and plenty of crystalline malt. Hints of ocean air, camphor, white rose, green pear and shiso. With water the fragrant ocean quality opens as does some tropical green fruit character, pure green papaya. An absolute delight, creamy and approachable without being one sided or boring at all. This is sunshine whisky, save it for Spring and Summer!

Notes

The wonderful Pulteney Distillery in the town of Wick is one of the north coast's most well loved. While it remains under the radar to the greater drinking public, the Scotch community has long sung its praises. The distillery is one of the few that still manages to sell the odd cask here and there, but until recently it was relatively unusual to see on the Independent Bottlers lists. We've recently picked up a few casks and very rarely do the malts from this seaside distiller ever let us down. The distillery itself, located on the eastern coast of the northern most tip of the Highlands in county Caithness, is one of Scotland's few "urban" distilleries. Tucked among granite homes, just blocks from the bustling harbor, The Old Pulteney Distillery quietly churns out a lovely ocean-flecked malt of the highest order. Built in 1826, its oddly shaped stills, each with a bulbous refractor ball in the neck and an hair pin turn of a lyne arm, produce atypical spirits. This relatively unadulterated expression of youngish Pulteney is about as typical a Pulteney as one might expect — full of fresh herbs, bright fruit and salty fruit. Hints of smoke and sea air cap off a totally lovely and typically atypical Pulteney. This lovely hogshead was filled in 2010 and bottled without coloring or chillfiltration at the end of 2021. Only 222 bottles of this lovely malt were bottled exclusively for K&L Wine Merchants at a cask strength of 57.6% abv.
