Vinous

Reviewed July 2014
Bright full ruby. Captivating aromas of redcurrant, raspberry, coffee and minerals. Juicy, supple and concentrated, with very good flesh for the vintage buffered by harmonious acidity. Finishes with a firm acid/tannin spine and lingering red berry, mineral and floral nuances. An outstanding showing for Bernadotte; the higher clay content of its soils and a generally later-ripening site allowed the grapes to reach maturity levels that were uncommon even in more famous estates. This tasting confirms my original Primeurs impression that the 2011 Bernadotte is one of the vintage's great buys. (ID)

(52% cabernet sauvignon, 43% merlot, 3% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot): Bright red. Aromatic nose of red berries, sweet spices, cedar and dusty minerals. Sweet, soft and clean, with red berry flavors dominating. Finishes with harmonious acidity and very good length. This is the best vintage of Bernadotte in some time: in 2011 the higher clay content of the soil and the later-ripening site allowed this wine to develop very good intensity and depth of flavor. Though it may surprise some to read this, in 2011 Bernadotte is not really that far behind its much more famous stablemate Pichon-Lalande (both are owned by the Rouzaud family of Louis Roederer fame) in quality. This is one of the true sleepers of the vintage.

Château Bernadotte is owned by the folks at Pichon-Lalande, where the wine was shown this year. This is a quite good example of the vintage, offering up a pure nose of cassis, dark berries, coffee bean, dark soil tones and a touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bdoied and just a touch four-square, but with very good balance and nicely measured tannins on the fairly long finish. Not bad at all!

A wine that shows attractive currant and chocolate character. Medium body, with soft tannins and a delicious finish.
