2019 Poggiarellino Rosso di Montalcino

SKU #1537846

Poggiarellino is a small property in the north of Montalcino and is not far from Altesino. They started making wine with the 1996 vintage and slowly grew their production. K&L started importing their wine with the 2000 vintage. Their Brunello di Montalcino production is usually about 450 cases to 500 cases and about half of that number for the Rosso di Montalcino. The Brunello is aged in 25hl Slavonian oak barrels and the Rosso di Montalcino is aged in stainless steel tanks.

The Rosso 2019 is truly about “baby brunello” in Montalcino. This is drinking GREAT ! right now and will over the next couple of years (but only if you can keep your hands off it and keep some in the cellar). Here is a wine that packs a wallop and lots of bang for your buck all in one! Give this rosso about an hour to open up and stand back, on the palate you will find strawberries and black cherries, a little bitter coco and some toasty oak & vanilla, fine tannins and a hint of Montalcino dust on the long finish.

Let me be one of the first to let you know that the 2019 vintage is sensational. And this 100% Sangiovese is stunning. Because we buy direct from the winery, this Rosso—which is actually a declassified Brunello—is an unbelievable deal. The wine shows the classic Marasca cherry aromatics from the north of Montalcino coupled with a bold, full-bodied richness on your palate. This wine is delicious now, but it will age well for another 5–7 years.
