2010 Glen Garioch 10 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Hogshead Cask Strength Highland Single Malt Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1510025

We’ve bottled several young Glen Garioch casks in the last few years and they’re undoubtedly some of our favorite bang-for-your-buck whiskies. The small Oldmeldrum distillery sits right in the middle of town and quietly makes a small quantity of lovely spirits for those in the know. Long a part of the Morrison Bowmore stable of distilleries, it is today owned by Beam Suntory—famous for letting each of their Scottish properties continue to do what they do best. Back in the day they malted all of their own barley, but today the maltings are getting converted into more distillation capacity. What hasn’t changed however is the whisky's underlying character. The distillery still produces a beautiful weighty spirit that combines sweet fruit with heavy cereal notes. For a mere $55 bucks this cask strength non-chill filtered delivers the goods at a respectable 10 years old.

: I say it every year, but Glen Garioch is the best distillery no one is talking about. Old Particular seems to have a nice line on the distillery—we've been buying this for three years straight now and it just keeps getting better and better. The Glen Garioch character is one of the most unique malt driven spirits and this cask shows plenty of that gorgeous character, but more obviously pointed by the oak than last year's younger refill bourbon barrel. The color is pale gold. The classic, gorgeous salted oats and steeping barley tea nose are there, but dotted with some citrus, persimmon, and licorice. The palate is weighty and peppery, with almost gravel like minerality. With water some more salt coming out and more vanilla/oak—I've added two big (3ml) splashes and now the pepper on the palate has relented somewhat. Finally, it's offering great preserved lemon and a chewy texture. The high proof on this one works better at full strength than with just a dash or water, but swims very well and loves more than just a few drops. Overall a gorgeous, zingy, peppery, idiosyncratic Glen Garioch that's just perfect in its unique loveliness.

This single malt is exciting and interesting . The nose is savory and inviting. In the mouth it is round and malty with wonderful savory notes and tastes on the dry side. There is a long finish with savory and dusty notes. Glen Garioch stands a little apart from the crowd and is worth taking a look at.

Glen Garioch is a longtime favorite here at K&L. Something about the rustic little urban distillery just speaks to me. The flavors in this cask are well beyond their 10 years, but the price tag sits far below it. The nose has an amazing umami characteristic that is faintly reminiscent of the best strong aroma Baiju. Mixed in with that is a complex fruitiness that has a very pretty strawberries and cream feel to it. That cream carries over onto the palate and the weight takes over the drinking experience. It's thick and creamy with a spoonful of cinnamon kind of spiciness. Once again Glen Garioch delivers a rich and chewy malt that has no business being as full and tasty as it is.
