2019 Mas de Libian "Khayyam" Côtes-du-Rhône (Previously $20)

SKU #1498905

The Thibon family acquired the Libian property in 1670, and in 1970 Jean-Pierre Thibon decided to wholly focus on wine production. Since then the estate has grown to 25 hectares of vineyards and 8 hectares of "nourishing" land planted to olive trees, vegetable and flower gardens, and grains to support the organic and biodynamic viticulture. Mas de Libian began its biodynamic farming in 2005 and was shortly certified by Demeter afterwards. The "Khayyam" is named for the 11th century Persian poet and mathematician who wrote poems celebrating wine and women. Khayyam is all from red clay soils covered in galets (round river stones). It is a blend of 75% Grenache, 15% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah. All destemmed, the wine is fermented in tank and then aged for 9 months in large oak foudres. Perfumed with gorgeous aromatics, this is a special bottling that will linger and last on the palate like a poem. *Biodynamic*

This beauty is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Syrah from vines deeply rooted under a carpet of galets roules, the large pebbles that give the Southern Rhone its distinctive look. A tribute to Omar Khayyam, the brilliant Persian scholar, astronomer, poet and mathematician of the eleventh century who wrote some of the most stirring and alluring lines of praise to both women and wine. And this luscious wine embodies such charms, revealing an elegant aromatic profile with floral undertones and an expansive, juicy palate of red plums, blackcurrants, thyme and lavender, tinged with pepper and licorice pastilles. Balanced tannins and delightful acidity give this wine the promise of cellaring for a decade, but it can be decanted and poured now if desired. It's after all, all about the pleasure.
