The Bedouet family's history in the region dates back to the 1890s, when the estate was created by Henri Bedouet. His grandson, Michel, took possession and expanded the holdings when he assumed the reins in 1990. In 2010, he began the conversion to organic farming. The vines for the Clos des Grands Primos are planted on a mix of gneiss, mica and schist soils creating the classic flavor profile of Muscadet. Notes of grapefruit, salted apples, melon, and flint expand on the nose and crisp acidity on the palate makes for one of our best Muscadets in the store right now.

One of my favorite visits in the Loire about a year or so ago was to Famille Bedouet in Muscadet. I arrived on a Sunday which is a pretty sacred day for not doing any business. But, Michel Bedouet and his family invited me to visit the vineyards, the cellar and have supper at their home. It was my first visit to the Muscadet region and it was wonderful. There, quaint villages undulate across the hilltops of the surrounding countryside in the most bucolic way. At dinner we drank a bottle of the Clos des Grands Primos (the 2018, because this was still in the vineyards) as an aperitif alongside a dip made with mackerel. An oily and gamy fish,, the wine cut straight through it. We moved courses to the quintessential Blanquette de Veaue (braised veal in wine and cream). The Clos des Grands Primos worked just as well. The 2019 brought back those memories of my visit. This vintage is laden with brined apples, peaches, wet stone and finishes with a little crunchy acidity. Just a pure and clean wine with so much depth and generosity beyond its humble price point. Like the Bedouets themselves, this wine will invite you in and dare you not to be enchanted by its friendly welcoming nature.

Melon de Bourgogne

- A white wine grape that originated in Burgundy, Melon de Bourgogne has, sadly, essentially vanished from that region. But fans of the varietal need not despair; its virtual disappearance from this pricy zip code has not prevented it from thriving in the Loire Valley, where it is made into the affordable, zippy, mineral, citrusy wines of Muscadet that pair so well with oysters. The best of those wines come from the region Muscadet de Sèvre et Maine. It is sometimes simply referred to as Muscadet.

This region is best known for Sauvignon blanc, Chenin blanc and Cabernet Franc. The most famous areas in the Loire Valley may be Sancerre and Vouvray.
