2018 Hundred Suns "Breaker Vineyard" Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir

SKU #1476639 95 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A unique wine that has a very striking, blueberry and violet nose with an iodine-like, savory edge and some darker-fruit and fresh-herb notes. The palate has such an intense, powerful feel with concentrated blueberries and an assertive frame of fluffy, succulent, fresh and long tannins. Inner quote mark (1/2020)

Such and incredible, unique wine. Sourced from some of the oldest vines in the region, a block of own-rooted, 777 clone Pinot Noir, planted in deep Nekia (volcanic basalt soils) with some large cobble stones in the lower section of the vineyard. Unfortunately this is the second to last vintage from these old vines as they have succumbed to the ravages of phylloxera and are currently being re-planted. However, what a way to go out! The 2018 is a stunningly complex wine with dark rose petal aromas, wild bramble fruit, freshly cut hedgerow, savory spices and earthy umami notes that are hard to put into words. Ethereal texture with soft silky tannin and vibrant, linear acidity on the finish. Quite coiled and cloaked when first poured, but a few enthusiastic swirls in a nice Burgundy stem quickly teases out magnificent and complex flavors. Very limited.
