2015 Costanti Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1474408 98 points Decanter

Outer quote mark After sitting out the 2014 vintage, Andrea Costanti calls 2015 a beautiful year and one of the best in the history of Brunello. He deemed it exceptional enough to craft a Riserva (to be released in 2021) yet his classic Brunello hasn't suffered for it. In fact, it's one of the greatest successes of the vintage. Gorgeous, seductive aromas are already expressive but still youthful. Cherry and plum are enveloped by exotic spice and a faint smokiness. The palate is plush and velvety with layers of powdery tannins that build, and tangy acid that cleanses the palate. Hedonistic but brilliantly balanced, it is hard to resist now but the best is definitely yet to come. (MM) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

98 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Fragrant and all about finesse, this gorgeous wine opens with enticing aromas of blue flower, forest floor, wild berry and a whiff of eucalyptus. It’s linear and elegant, delivering succulent red cherry, pomegranate, star anise and tobacco alongside polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced. (KO) Inner quote mark (5/2020)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The Conti Costanti 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is vinous and ripe with lots of energy that comes from plummy black fruit and dried blackberry. The wine is front-loaded with those varietal tones, but the mouthfeel reveals a more delicate and softer approach than you might expect given the potency of that first nose. The wine achieves harmony, and offers a nice, long finish. The label states that fruit comes from the Colle al Matrichese, but I am not sure if that is an official estate vineyard designation. Either way, this is a serious cellar-worthy Brunello to sip and consider with a platter of fine cheeses. (ML) Inner quote mark (10/2020)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A fruity style, featuring black cherry and black currant flavors, supported by notes of iron, leather and tobacco. Taut and vibrant, with a lingering finish. (BS) Inner quote mark (6/2020)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Costanti's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino explodes from the glass with a classic display of leather, dusty earth, dried strawberries, and savory spice. On the palate, soft, silky textures usher in ripe red fruits, complemented by sweet spices and brisk acids, which create a pure, feminine expression, as hints of fine tannin slowly mount. The finish is medium in length, with just a slight tug of tannic heft. (EG) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

K&L Notes

93+ points, Ian D'Agata in Vinous: "Deep red. Perfumed, saline aromas of red cherry, raspberry nectar, herbs, violet, red roses and minerals on the captivating nose; this really opens and improves with aeration, so make sure you open the bottle at least an hour or so ahead. Clean fresh, and saline, with a metallic edge and a brooding quality to the vibrant, juicy red cherry and raspberry flavors that are long and deep." (04/2020)

I love the nose on the 2015 Constanti Brunello. Mounds of well fortified aromas leap out, raspberry, cherry, pomegranate, dried/fresh hibiscus amid there and some savory herbal tones that follow in on the back end. On its first sip all flavors envelop the palate and matches the nose to a tee, I love that! Along with the lingering silky yet refined tannin shows an abundance of flavor in this bottle. I recommend purchasing a 6 pack and open it over the next 5 years and be sure to share this with that special someone that knows a thing or two about well made Brunello, this one is a conversation bottle.

Whenever I am in Montalcino I make a stop at Costanti, as I use their wines as a guide to the vintage for all of Montalcino. The Consorzio even monitors one of their vineyards for the same reason—I’ll have to keep better secrets. Andrea Costanti is a purist, and I find that his wines are some of the most classically styled and flavored in Montalcino. When I tasted Andrea’s 2015 Costanti Brunello di Montalcino, I was blown away. I tasted the Riserva as well, and these wines are absolutely amazing. Just to be clear, they are over 15% abv—I only mention this because he just got 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, whose critic mentioned this was a problem in the vintage. Well, I guess it can’t be too much of a problem—or maybe it kept him from getting 100 points! Andrea’s wines are usually destined for the cellar upon release, but this vintage is so good you can drink it now. (Greg St. Clair, K&L Italian wine buyer)
