2016 Vietti "Castiglione" Barolo

SKU #1463861 95 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Lastly, the 2016 Barolo Castiglione from Vietti shows the warmer style of the vintage with its ripe, sexy style yet has a wonderful elegance as well as medium to full body, ripe, integrated tannins, and layered notes of black raspberries, cherries, spring flowers, orange blossom, and violets. It's not massive, but it’s beautifully complex, with plenty of richness and depth on the mid-palate, and shows the sunny, sexy style of the vintage, followed by a great finish. Drink this fabulous Barolo over the coming 15-20+ years or more. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark Tight and focused with racy, fine tannins. I like the bright fruit and vivid acidity. Cedar, berry and white-truffle flavors. Tight and linear. Needs time to open. Inner quote mark (8/2020)

Outer quote mark The Vietti 2016 Barolo Castiglione opens to a grounded and authentic profile with hints of mint, balsam herb and tilled earth. The primary fruit is neatly folded into all those other components, and all received equal billing when the final results are counted. The entry-level Castiglione is always the most accessible of Vietti's Baroli, but this vintage shows a heightened level of intensity, complexity and freshness. Those silky tannins are followed by beautiful menthol brightness. This is a real charmer. (ML) 94+ Inner quote mark (7/2020)

Outer quote mark The 2016 Barolo Castiglione is a dazzling wine that will show readers just how compelling this vintage is, even among entry-level wines from top producers. Rich, ample and explosive, the 2016 possesses tremendous richness and resonance from the very first taste. Bright red cherry and red plum fruit, wild flowers, mint, blood orange and spice build as this sumptuous, dramatic Barolo shows all it's got. As always, the Castiglione is built on a core of fruit from Ravera. In 2016, the Castiglione benefits from the inclusion of several new sites, including Ginestra, Mosconi, Bricco Ravera (in Monforte), Le Coste, Costabelle, Meriame, Briccolina and Codana. All I can say is: What a wine! (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

Love the 2016 vintage of this wine. The nose brings aromas of dried cherry and roses, and on the palate you will find raspberries, tar, tobacco, truffle, and a little Langhe dust with a good tannin structure. I love the elegance to this wine, and with all of its varietal purity here, I recommend decanting for a couple hours...or even aging a couple of years (I have some 2000 & 2001 that I am still waiting on.). This would show extremely well with a wild mushroom risotto or a barbecue Tri-tip.

The nose of this wine is truly classic, waves of rose, truffle, smoke and earth effortlessly drift from your glass. On the palate it immediately shows you why 2016 is such a standout vintage, the focus, depth of flavors, body and lift all say WOW this is really something. The flavors echo bits of the nose but show a plumy richness as the texture spreads across your mouth, then once again the classic tar and rose flavors develop with a deepening intensity. The finish shows balance, tannin, fruit, spice and an excellent lift. The tannins are present (this is Barolo) but so well balanced you can drink this wine now but it will age for another 10-15 years easily.

Vietti Castiglione is usually the standard bearer for affordable, high-pedigree Barolo in any great vintage, and 2016 is no different. Aromatically it is engaging and classic with roses, red fruit, and a touch of sandalwood. Textured, mouthwatering, and bursting with fruit and fine tannins, the palate is deftly balanced. Notes of blood orange, bright cherry, and licorice lead to a lasting finish. Incredibly dynamic right now, it is a ton of wine for an "entry level" bottling, and a hint of how special the vintage can be. This is one of our first 2016s and it demonstrates why so many collectors are excited for what is widely considered to be a special vintage for Barolo.
