Reviewed April 2019
Vincent Carême has assembled a 42-acre domaine in Vouvray, including several parcels of 45-year-old vines. He’s proven himself to be a masterful grower of Chenin, delivering wines like this racy, delicious 2017. This vintage has a textural beauty, combining silk and a more open, oxidative feel of cotton, while the fruit ranges from tart white currants to bruised apple. A spicy fennel-seed complexity makes the wine feel ornate. Compelling to drink now, this is worth following over the next several years.

This wine, living up to its name, is certainly dry. With tight acidity as well as a yeasty edge, it is young and full of bright white fruits. With the intense crisp texture and the mineral character of this wine, allied to the touch of spice from wood aging, it needs to age. Drink this full, fruity wine from 2021. (RV)

Bright pear, green apple and quince notes stream through, flecked with powdered ginger and backed by a fine mineral echo through the finish. Refined and focused. (JM)

Vincent Careme has become my favorite go-to producer in Vouvray. From top-to-bottom, he creates cuvees that are sensational reflections of their soils and sites. This favorite son of the region has worked (and continues to work) abroad in South Africa but his native soil of Vouvray is where he makes some of the most outstanding Chenin Blancs coming from anywhere in the world. The Sec is pure delight with Pippin apple, Anjou pear and lemon rind rounded by a host of spices including nutmeg, ginger powder and allspice. It is linear and focused on the palate, with years of aging potential but why wait, really? A perfect foil for salty and/or spicy dishes, but perfect really with a rotisserie chicken if you want to keep things simpler.

Notes

93 points Chris Kissack, Winedoctor.com: "This is Vincent's blended cuvée made from home-grown fruit, from parcels on the plateau behind the première côte. A nose of crushed minerals and apricot stone here, suggesting a broad frame and certainly an expressive one. The palate is correspondingly broad, with plenty of pithy and grippy energy, and a fine frame. This is quite charming, in a rather soft, supple and charming style, with a pithy finish." (02/2019)
