2017 Carbonnieux Blanc, Pessac-Léognan

SKU #1442912 95 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Right off the bat this has richness and concentration, with peachy creaminess through the mid-palate but without sacrificing tension and lift. It's a fine example of what 2017 can deliver in the best whites, and should age very well. (JA) Inner quote mark (4/2018)

95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Château Carbonnieux 2017 Pessac-Léognan. This wine’s smooth texture is deceptive. Under this creamy guise, a taut, steely character promises long-term aging. Richness and fruitiness harmonize with complexity. (RV) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc has a very harmonious bouquet with scents of lime, white flowers, melon and grapefruit that gradually unfold with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a little more weight and persistence than the Deuxième Vin, though truth is that there is not an enormous qualitative difference between the two. But here I appreciate the salinity on the finish and I suspect it will age with style. (NM) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Very bright, with lots of gooseberry and chamomile notes racing along, this glistens with a fleur de sel edge on the mouthwatering finish. Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. (JM) Inner quote mark (1/2020)

91 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Attractive tropical-fruit aromas with mangoes and papaya, as well as peaches. The palate delivers a smooth and juicy feel with supple peaches and lemons, cast in fleshy mode. A blend of 60% sauvignon blanc and 40% semillon. Inner quote mark (12/2019)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The Carbonnieux 2017 Blanc gives aromas of lemon pie, lime cordial, honeysuckles and almonds with wafts of cedar and white pepper. The palate is medium-bodied, tightly wound and crisp, finishing long. (LPB) Inner quote mark (3/2020)

89-91 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Notes of lemon curd, citrus rind and hints of crushed rock define the 2017 Château Carbonnieux, which is medium-bodied, pure, and elegant on the palate. It’s another great white from the Pessac-Léognan region in 2017. Inner quote mark (4/2018)

K&L Notes

91 points Antonio Galloni for Vinous: "The 2017 Carbonnieux Blanc is absolutely lovely. Lemon confit, white flowers and green orchard fruit open up first, followed by a range of bright citrus and floral notes that add brilliance to a very pretty upper register." (03/2020)

There are few wines out there as unique as Bordeaux blanc. The blend of bright Sauvignon Blanc with the richness of Semillon aged in barrel to gently coax its aromatics is truly like nothing else out there. And even among the Bordeaux Blanc, there are few wines that are as consistently profound as Carbonnieux. There's a wealth of crisp, tropical fruits on the nose with pineapple, pasison fruit and keffir lime. The palate follows up with soft, plush notes of guava and vivid acidity. On occasion, I find some Bordeaux blanc can have slightly reductive aromas, but this is pure, clean and beautiful. Fantastic, fantastic wine.

Honeysuckle, flan and lemon sorbet aromas waft from the glass when this is poured. This shows wonderful weight and texture in the citrusy and flowery middle but the mineral soaked finish is clean and bracing. Although this will age well it is already vibrant, complex and substantial.

60% Sauvignon Blanc, 40% Semillon. This particular vintage has a higher level of bright tones upfront. Semillon really shines through and adds more this time around with its classic green pear, granny smith apple, kaffir lime and honey notes but then there is a subtle guava, passion fruit on the back end. Acidity is a bit less flashy in this vintage and the mouthfeel is a bit more broad and more exotic. These expressions emerge slowly which makes the want to spend more time with the wine enjoying and capturing all those flavors.

I was pleasantly surprised by this white bordeaux composed of 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon, with notes of caramel, cabbage and citrus on the nose, and the palate exhibiting savory mushroom, lemon and melon characteristics. At 13% alcohol this medium bodied wine is an easy sipper and pairs well with seafood or on its own. Enjoy!

WOW! This dry white has it all--minerals, citrus, elegance, acidity, white flower. 60% Sauvignon Blanc and 40% Semillon. The figgy nature of Semillon shows through, balanced by the bracing acidity of the Sauvignon Blanc. Very vibrant wine that drinks perfectly right now and will cellar well for several years. Just so delicious--you will drink the whole bottle. Clams, oysters, petrale sole--heck, or just by the pool. This is so good!
Drink from 2020 to 2027
